A guide to the terms
Four names, four different focuses
These terms are often used interchangeably, but they’re not standardised technical definitions. To understand what a service does, check its expiry, deletion rules and forwarding options—not just its name.
- Temporary email
- Emphasises short-term use. You get an address to receive email for a limited time, usually without setting a separate password. FadeInbox temporary inboxes require no sign-up.
- Disposable email
- Emphasises using an address for a short task, such as receiving a sign-up code. “Disposable” doesn’t mean you can receive only one email or open it only once.
- Self-destructing email
- Emphasises automatic expiry. FadeInbox addresses stop working when they expire, and emails and attachments in the inbox are deleted. You can’t use an expired address to retrieve them.
- Burner email
- Emphasises an address you don’t need to keep long-term. FadeInbox deletes emails when the address expires, not after you read them. To remove a message right away, delete it yourself.
Before signing up, consider whether you’ll need this address to recover your account later. Don’t rely on temporary email as your only contact method for anything you need to keep. See the sign-up checklist.
